Navigating Illinois’ New AI Law: What Behavioral Health Clinicians Need to Know

  November 6, 2025    1:00PM CT

Hosted in partnership with the Illinois Association for Behavioral Health (IABH), this webinar will explore Illinois’ newly enacted Wellness and Oversight for Psychological Resources Act (WOPR), the first state law in the nation regulating the use of artificial intelligence in mental health. Jud DeLoss, IABH CEO, will provide an overview of the law, including its definitions, restrictions, enforcement mechanisms, and the broader intent behind its passage.

Following this, Dr. Mike Arevalo, licensed clinical psychologist, will translate the statute into practical guidance for clinicians, highlighting what the law means for everyday practice. Participants will learn what is prohibited—such as AI chatbots delivering therapy or AI tools making treatment decisions—what remains permissible, including administrative and supplementary uses, and how providers can adjust policies, supervision, vendor contracts, and documentation to remain compliant.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the key provisions and restrictions of Illinois’ new AI law for mental health.

  2. Identify the difference between prohibited therapeutic uses of AI and permissible administrative or supplementary uses.

  3. Identify the potential clinical, ethical, and legal implications of the law for mental health practice.
